CHTHONIC is widely recognized as one of Taiwan’s most iconic heavy metal bands. Founded in 1995, the band’s sound draws deeply from Taiwan’s cultural roots, incorporating folk melodies, enka-style phrasing, pentatonic scales, and the theatrical contours of traditional opera. Their compositions are further enriched by traditional instruments such as the erhu, zheng, and nose flute. Since the release of Mirror of Retribution in 2009, CHTHONIC has built an expansive creative universe, blending history and local mythologies to evoke powerful visions of the underworld and cycles of reincarnation. Alongside the rage and darkness that define metal, their music conveys a haunting sadness and emotional depth, forging a distinctive sound that is unmistakably Taiwanese.
Since their international debut in 2002, CHTHONIC has performed in over thirty countries, giving more than two hundred concerts around the world. They have appeared at some of the most prominent music festivals, including Fuji Rock, Summer Sonic, and Loud Park in Japan, Ozzfest in the United States, Download and Bloodstock in the United Kingdom, and Wacken Open Air in Germany. The band has also collaborated frequently with artists from across the globe, expanding their reach and influence.
CHTHONIC has received Taiwan’s Golden Melody Award for Best Band on two occasions, for the albums Relentless Recurrence and Battlefields of Asura. Their work has been featured on the covers of top music publications across Asia, Europe, and North America, such as Metal Hammer, Kerrang!, Terrorizer, Burrn!, and Revolver. They were once voted second place for Best Band in the World in a readers’ poll. Japan’s Burrn! magazine praised them as “a perfect union of sorrowful emotion and indomitable spirit,” calling the band a towering presence that few others can match. Though CHTHONIC has taken a more low-profile approach in recent years, they remain influential. Their 2023 single Pattonkan was featured in the Recording Academy’s Global Spin series, and their 2025 release Endless Aeons was selected by UK critics as one of the year’s must-hear metal tracks.
