Sonia Calico: Neo Tokyo Folk ft. Dustin Ngo (Music Video)
Sonia Calico is a music producer born in Japan and raised in Taipei, celebrated for her bold and boundary-pushing approach to club music. Her sound merges the deep bass of Western dance music with textures drawn from East Asian traditions. Sometimes she weaves in subtle elements of Mandopop, while more often she deconstructs and reassembles rhythms and instruments from across cultures to create a sound entirely her own. Her work explores themes of technology, futurism, everyday experience, and social commentary. Formerly the frontwoman of Taiwan’s legendary electro-rock group Go Chic, Sonia has since devoted herself to the production and promotion of underground dance music.
In 2020, she released her debut solo album Simulation of an Overloaded World. The album was selected by Bandcamp Daily as one of the month’s best electronic releases and received acclaim from international platforms such as Mixmag, DJ Mag, and NOWNESS. Beyond her own music, Sonia has played a key role in shaping Taiwan’s electronic music scene. In 2022, she launched Synergy Festival, the first large-scale event in Taiwan to fuse digital art with electronic music. In 2024, she curated GLOWBALL Festival at Taipei Music Center, an immersive event centered on electronic music, dance, and visual art that further amplified the visibility of Taiwan’s independent electronic music culture.
Sonia’s impact extends far beyond Taiwan. The Fader once described her as an artist “defining dance music for Taipei’s new generation.” Her visionary production and genre-blending DJ sets have earned her international recognition, multiple music awards, and frequent invitations to perform abroad. With every project, she continues to expand the possibilities for independent electronic music in Taiwan.
